Splat Productions, Inc... eh? The company name may register as somewhat curious and whimsical, but over the past 3-years in particular, the local, award-winning digital marketing agency has gained quite a loyal following and not just from the name's high stickiness! Chad Breitenfeld, Splat's Director of Business Development admits, "When I first joined the company in 2005, I questioned whether the company name would evoke the sort of credibility I thought necessary to secure the corporate business relationships we were targeting. However, I noticed in speaking with folks, that the mere mention of the word 'Splat' would often trigger a smile and laughter. They say that laughter is the shortest distance between two people... so, I quickly knew that we were onto something!"
Founded in 2001, Splat Productions' original incarnation was that of a specialty design shop, focused on producing 3D renderings, animation and interactive tools for local real estate developers. David Hitt, Splat Productions' Founder, surveyed other local East Coast markets and realized that although specialty design services were embraced elsewhere, particularly along the business corridor, there was an apparent void of both perceived need and capability in the Philadelphia market. David aimed to change all of that, "What I found interesting was that, as I studied other markets, Washington and New York, for instance – I was seeing digital renderings, virtual walkthroughs and sophisticated interactive floorplan modules being used widely by the development community. In fact, there almost seemed to be a game of whiz-bang one-upmanship going on! And, although slow to adopt such technologies, the skepticism shared by the Philadelphia development community eventually was replaced by a prevailing attitude of we've got to have 'virtuals' in order to successfully pre-sell new construction projects."

The firm's unique specialty design arm allowed it to effectively ride the development renaissance that was afoot in Philadelphia early in the new millennium. With the softening residential market though, the landscape for Splat was quickly changing. Fortunately, the firm recognized reasonably early on that without a broader geographic reach and a diverse suite of creative services, they likely would have been unable to hurdle the economic challenges that were rapidly approaching. In response, Splat evolved into a broader-minded agency, servicing their expanding clients' specialty design needs, as well as their traditional advertising needs. "We recognized that we were in the unique position of marrying our multimedia capabilities, which most agencies do not possess, with our expanding traditional advertising arm." says David.
Today, the company is comprised of strategists, designers, 3D artists and account managers. And, it is this tech-savvy, dedicated staff that manages Splat's near-equally-balanced appendages: multimedia design – 3D animation, renderings, motion graphics and real-time simulation modules – and traditional advertising: web design and authoring, banner and flash inserts, introductory SEO, interactive presentations, print advertising, and branding/identity campaigns. Splat's mantra has always been high-value, proactive-service, collaborative design. Chad Breitenfeld comments, "If you collaborate, I mean truly collaborate with the client – honest and open conversation, with probing, thoughtful questions from both sides -- the design, message and impact of the deliverable will most often be spot on... rinse and repeat!"

Today, Splat's roster of clients includes both valued local companies, as well as fortune 500 accounts: Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll (BSAI), Double Tree Hotels, Lockheed Martin, Falcone Group and WaWa Corporation, among others. For BSAI, Splat Productions has essentially operated as their virtual marketing arm for the better part of the past two and a half years. Splat's lean enterprise has allowed them to produce cost-effective resonant print, interactive and demonstrative evidence deliverables for a variety of Ballard's practice groups. For the Falcone Group, which owns the iconic Two Liberty Place, Splat produced a full-range of interactive, motion and print deliverables, including the NAHB award-winning website: www.twoliberty.com. And although unable to share specifics, Splat Productions has recently partnered with Lockheed Martin, to assist with their 3D simulation needs. "The government agency and defense contractor opportunities hold incredible appeal for us!" notes Chad. "We recently secured a HUBZone certification, which positions Splat for government set-aside contracts. Admittedly, the application process was exceptionally challenging, but now that we've been awarded the certification, I'm anxious to market our firm to both government agencies and prime contractors."
Another sector that Splat has recently started to mine is the video game industry. With Splat's 3D capabilities, they can effectively position themselves as a 3D art asset firm. Chad Breitenfeld is a founding member of Video Game Initiative-Philly (VGI-Philly), which endeavors to create a fertile landscape – read local tax incentive and other considerations -- for relocating, co-locating or newly established video game publishing companies. The presumption is that local video game publisher relationships will lead to partnership opportunities for Splat that wouldn't exist otherwise... because in the end, it's truly all about relationships!
